Safety First
You know it’s kinda weird to see the sign that says Safety First on construction sites and then you would see the construction workers not wearing hard hats or safety glasses while they are inside the sites. You can see these signs in almost all the construction sites here in Cebu, the Insular Life construction site in Ayala, the building beside AVON in the Capitol Area, the condominium building beside I1 in IT Park in Lahug but more often than not, you will see a couple of workers who are not wearing these safety gears. I am not sure why, is it because these construction companies cannot afford to give their people the safety gears that they need? Or maybe they can but they just don’t want to since this is an add-on to their expenses? Or is it these people just choose not to wear them even if have it? If it’s any of the above reasons, then my next question is, why do these reasons exist? Don’t we have a law in the Philippines that covers the safety of the workers? If there’s one then why does are we seeing this kind of infractions? I know this is like a small thing but if you would come to think of it, a lot of people can benefit from this law. Both the worker and the company will benefit from it. So I hope the construction companies who doesn’t implement simple safety regulations in their company should consider the benefits of having one in the long run. If we don’t have this law in the Philippines then this is one suggestion that our lawmakers can take. If we have one, the lawmakers better visit it again and make sure that it gets strict implementation. Goodness! Think of the families of this laborers!
